I glanced at the calendar hanging on the wall and I wanted to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head.
The day and the week and the month were full of everyone’s things. Sports, meetings, school events, dinners, holidays…all good things.
But if they’re so good then why do they make me want to run and hide?
No one ever said busyness is next to godliness.
So why do we pursue it as a badge of honor. It’s as if we think having calendar squares full means our lives are full.
When we are searching for value in the fullness of our calendar, we miss out on the real value in our lives.
When we spend our time running from one commitment to another we miss out on opportunities.
When we cower behind the day rather than step out into it we miss out on joy.
I want value and opportunities and joy in my life.
In order for that to happen, I need to guard my days in the way that is best for me. When we make choices that fill us up, we are free to be the people we want to be.
Who do you want to be?

Rebecca, this post reminds me of “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”. Not every task is meant for us to do. May we be wise and know how best to fill our days.
Yes! Wisdom is KEY!
Good point: If it’s “ALL GOOD,” then why do I have that feeling in the pit of my stomach?
I’ve become pretty skilled at balancing task upon task, but I bought a small planner once again for 2020, limiting my daily list by the sheer lack of space and lines, so it’s back to that discipline again. Always needing a refresher course in the art of saying, “Enough!”
There’s only so many lines in the planner. Just like there’s only so much time in a day 🙂
We have so many more opportunities now that ever before. My own kids had much more on their calendar that I or my siblings ever did. I think part of that is the school system: we didn’t have nearly as many extracurricular school events when I was a kid. But part of it is just so many more opportunities. Yet we can’t do all the things. We so need God’s wisdom to know what to say yes and no to.
I agree wholeheartedly. God’s wisdom in our calendar can make all the difference!
The badge of honor for business! <—Now that sounds like something I could achieve! LOL And I don't even have all those little kiddos at home. 🙂 Bless your heart!!! Great post, Rebecca. We really do need to carve out some non-busy time this holiday season.

Thanks, friend! Learning to find grace in all the busy!
It’s easy to let busyness become our boss. It’s taken me years, but I’ve learned to stop acting like a bee flitting from one project to the next and never finding completion or rest. Learning to say, “No.” was the first step.
It sure is! God can give us wisdom for our Yeses!
Hey Rebecca! So much of what you’ve shared resonates with me. I’ve started some commitments (pertaining to my kids) that I can’t get out of, and I can’t wait for this school year to end. Funny how when I said yes to it all I thought I was helping my kids. And while they may be ok with it, this momma needs to slow down. Thanks for sharing this goodness, my friend. It’s always a pleasure to visit with you. 😊
Praying for grace and peace in those committed spaces. I know God will equip you and honor your heart toward Him.
My devotional today was about thanking and praising God in all things. So when my calendar looks too full and overwhelming, I refocus on the One that matters and will help me through it all.
What a great way to battle that overwhelmed feeling!
So good, Rebecca. We do need to guard our time zealously. We get to decide whether to fill up our days with business or to stop and take a breath. I loved this line; “When we spend our time running from one commitment to another we miss out on opportunities.” This has happened to me so many times!
So grateful we can encourage one another to be intentional with our time!
It’s that time of year when busy swoops in and makes us crazy. I am so glad you addressed it here. I am working on giving myself time to slow down and truly prepare my heart for this season.
Yes! It is a responsibility to slow down and prepare our hearts. And it is so worth it!
Definitely felt the “too busy” today. laurensparks.net
Praying for some peace and grace for you!
Rebecca, I was just thinking about this exact thing the other day. Sometimes I feel the same way when I look at the calendar with all its full squares. Where are the empty squares? I long for more empty squares!
I know! I’m learning to create them or they won’t happen. It’s no easy task!
