Stuck in a Reading Rut, Here’s How I Got Out

I’ve been feeling stuck in a reading rut lately. Usually, I read one fiction and one nonfiction at a time. But I couldn’t seem to motivate myself to pick up my book and read. So, I gave up the non-fiction for the summer. Giving myself permission to only read fiction has helped me so much!

(Don’t worry, I still love nonfiction. My brain just needed the break!)

Here’s what I’ve been reading to get out of my reading rut:

The Wife Between Us

This was exactly what I needed to get out of a reading slump. Fast-paced, mysterious, and character-driven, the story held my interest (even when I should have been sleeping. The Wife Between Us was just what I needed to shake things up and help me find my groove again.

Missing Isaac

This book had been on my TBR list for years. It just kept disappearing to the bottom of the list, but I’m so glad I rescued it! Unlikely relationships across race and class and an unsolved murder moved the story quickly. Missing Isaac takes place in 1965 when things were different. Or were they?

The Midnight Library

Imagine living other versions of your life. What if you went on that date or skipped your stop at the coffee shop one morning? Nora discovers what her life would be like if she made different choices. While The Midnight Library was a little predictable, it reminded me of a choose your own adventure book for adults, and I loved that.

Real Virtue

The pages of Real Virtue unfolded like a movie. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to relate to the story about a woman who liked online gaming, but I found myself captivated by her. Drawn back to her hometown where she never thought she would return, the story goes deeper with issues like loving someone with mental illness, stalking, forgiveness, and romance.

How do you get out of a reading rut?
