Can My Calling Really Be That Simple?

Ok, I know the other day when I wrote about your calling I said, the end. But the truth is it just doesn’t always seem that easy, does it?

Four words made it sound so simple, but here we are, everyday, struggling to understand what it means. I get it.

So what do we do?

I’m going to give you the only answer I know: walk forward the best we can. It’s all we can do. And the beautiful thing? God’s grace takes care of the rest.

It may sound too simplistic. But I get the feeling that’s how it’s supposed to be.

When you are not sure if you are walking in your calling, ask yourself these two simple questions… Share on X

How am I loving God today?

How am I loving others today?

(For that second question maybe you need to get more specific. Enter someone’s name. And I’m going to give you a hint…it may not always be the easy person you want it to be.)

It’s easy, especially in Christian circles, to get grandiose ideas of what calling looks like. It’s easy to look for people who make a big difference, give up everything, and have the numbers (or passport stamps) to prove it.

But that’s us using our handy-dandy measuring sticks. And I’m going to tell you a secret about those measuring sticks:

Measuring sticks get us into trouble. Ann Voskamp writes brave and reminds us:

Measuring sticks always become weapons.

Ann Voskamp

How do I know?

I’ve never used one and felt good about it.

Measuring sticks either make us feel good (at the expense of someone else who doesn’t measure up) or make us feel bad (at our own expense).

I’ve yet to find a bible verse that tells us to compare, to measure up, or to build pedestals. Share on X

So, if we’re not measuring what does it look like to pursue our calling in real life?

While we can’t begin to have every answer for every scenario, maybe we could help one another.

What is one way you need help walking in your 4 word calling today?

Your calling is as simple as answering two questions.
