I’ve never really understood sports. I get the concept of the games, but cheering for one side baffles me. Is that weird?
I always seem to find myself wondering if I’m on the right side.
My son plays basketball. It’s a rec team and every Saturday he faces off against a friend or two on the court. They are playing the same sport with the same goals in the same town. The only difference is the color of the shirt. Otherwise, everything is the same.
Of course I cheer for my boy because, well, he’s mine. I am rooting for him when he has the ball and when he doesn’t. I am watching steps and effort and making sure he drinks water. I’m there for him. 100%.
But when one of his friends in a different color shirt makes a basket, I clap. I know he is on the other team, but I can’t help but be happy for a kid when he makes a great play. And don’t even get me started on when someone gets hurt. I don’t care what team he is on, I just want him to be okay and have fun playing the game.
I’ve often thought life was like being on a certain team. And I usually placed myself on the losing one. I pictured God on His throne shaking His head when I miss a shot or fumble through something. I imagine Him cheering for the other side because it always seems that they are better.
Even in church, I’ve done this. You know my feelings on worship leaders. Clearly they are on the winning side, right? And pastors . . . God is team PASTORS all the way.
And he is rooting for them. 100%. But I missed the part where He’s also rooting for me.
Remember this: God is rooting for you 100% all of the time! Share on XIt’s easy to think of God looking for the sure thing, the win, the most spiritual ones and backing them. But God isn’t like that. He doesn’t pick teams.
He’s not cheering for the Worship Leaders over the Sunday School Teachers
There’s no championship game between the Pastors and the Almost-Missed-Church-because-we-couldn’t-get-out-the-door teams.
Even if you’re on the Never-Been-to-Church team, He is still on your side.
Because God doesn’t cheer for teams; He cheers for YOU.
It’s hard to really understand this, especially because we see all the ways we think we fall short. But through every missed shot, every mistake, every out-of-bounds, God is still rooting for us. Why?
He loves you. Perfectly. Always. Completely.
Everything you do (or don’t do) today, remember you have someone cheering for you. Someone who is glad you are theirs. Someone who picked you from the beginning and would pick you again today.
Can you hear Him cheering?

I find myself wishing I had played sports in school because I”ve seen what a huge benefit it has been to my kids and the kind of thinking it fosters.
Having said that, I’m really not very competitive, so wouldn’t have been much of an asset to a sports team–but I”m grateful that God himself fights for us when we’re on his team.
Amen, Michele!
I’m always cheering for the “Almost-Missed-Church-because-we-couldn’t-get-out-the-door teams.” These poor mamas with little ones have my heart all the time!
Pinned.
Thanks for linking up at InstaEncouragements, Rebecca!
YES!!!!
Rebecca, I love this post for several reasons. I so relate to cheering for the other team. I may be guilty of yelling “Great shot!” for one team while my son is a coach for the opposing team. Thank you for reminding us that God is on our side – all of our sides. He cheers for us all. Maybe we look most like Him when we also want the best for others, even when they are on the opposing team.
Yes! That’s so true! We’re all on His team!
