Discover how to connect with God. There are simple ways we can make space for God in our everyday life. It doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be real.
I still don’t know how I can be praising God in worship on a Sunday morning and feel so far away from Him by Monday. Sure, I could put worship on or read my Bible, but when life gets busy I seemed to lose that closeness I felt in His presence. Every week was the same: go to church, feel close to God, start my week and wonder where He is. Did He leave? Did I?
I struggled with the disconnect between how I feel on Sunday mornings and how things looked on a Tuesday afternoon. Life felt busy, chaotic, and lacking the peace and connection I had during worship.
I set out to find ways to connect with God with 2 rules in mind:
- It had to be simple
- It had to be meaningful
I’ve tried books and studies, online groups and apps, prayer times, and journals. Some are amazing (like these), but sometimes I just need to get super basic. In all of that, there have been 3 things I keep coming back to that work in the middle of all the messiness of life.
Connect with God by Saying Hello
It can be as simple as starting with His name. Jesus. Father. Lord. Whatever name you want to use for God that day.
This isn’t a prayer time, but more of a hello, a greeting, an invitation. Recognizing that we see Him and welcome Him into our day reminds us that He’s there.
God's name is always enough. {And other tips to connect with Jesus in the middle of your week.} Share on XUse The Bible to Connect with God
Don’t skim over this. His Word is for you.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a single verse or a whole book. It could be in an old family Bible or a verse of the day app on your phone.
One single verse.
Be present in His Word and you will have a deeper connection with God. Sometimes it’s even as simple as filling your social media feed with things that will fill your soul.
Listen Wisely to Connect with God

Great post! Shared on Pinterest, Happy to have found you on Kingdom Bloggers link up. 😉
Thanks so much for sharing, April!
I love all of these tips, but especially “listen wisely.” I think it caught my eye the most because it’s a tip to connecting with God that isn’t talked about much and can make all the difference! Thanks for sharing these, Rebecca! I’ll be pinning and tweeting for sure!
It does make a difference, doesn’t it?! Thanks for sharing!
Rebecca, yes please to faith that is solid and growing and very personal. No thanks to bells and whistles and gizmos and such that so easily end up distracting us from what we’re really yearning for.
Jesus.
They can be distracting, can’t they? Grateful for the grace that brings me back every time!
Rebecca,
I wrote a post this week about how we need to change and become like little children in our faith. One thing little children do is keep it simple. Your post points this out beautifully. Sometimes the best rule of thumb is to go back to basics. Him, His Word, Listen. I know when I miss these, my day invariably doesn’t go as well. Truly tools for daily life.
Blessings,
Bev
Yes! Simple is always best for me!
“His word. Don’t skim over this.” Best advice for sure. It doesn’t have to be long or on a schedule or so many over preconceived notions that we have about meaningful Bible reading – but we have to be in the word. Every day. Enjoyed your post!
Yes! I discounted the value of the Word in my life for a long time. I’m learning to embrace it now!
Rebecca, I love the simplicity of this. Sometimes we just need someone to lay it out simply for us, step-by-step, and you have done that here. Pinned. Thanks for linking up at InstaEncouragements!
Thanks Patsy! And thanks for sharing!
Great tips, Rebecca! I sometimes feel the disconnect between Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoon too. Why can’t that peace and calm stay with me all week? I loved this line: “It doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be real”
Exactly!
I loved this post!!! Watching what you take in, whether it’s what you watch, listen to, read, is so important to our spiritual well being!! Thank you for linking up @worthbeyondrubies and can’t wait to watch your videos!!
So glad you’re here Diane! We forget the impact of listening — especially to God!
Wow, am I ever good at coming up with complicated piles of 3×5 cards and prayer lists and reading schedules and piles of devotional books that “would be good.” Thanks for encouragement that it’s just God and me and centering my heart around the truth that matter.
I’m right there with you friend! Thinking a system or book will “fix” my relationship with Jesus and get it closer to what it should be. Trying to make the choice to press into Him simply instead of making it so complicated!
I love these suggestions, Rebecca. I listen to a lot of podcast and sermons during the busy of my day to help me fill up on Him and stay connected. Tweeted!
Your neighbor at Welcome Heart,
Tammy
Thanks Tammy! Do you have a podcast you love?
Great post with three easy steps. I implement all three daily and really lean into Listen Wisely. I’ve been playing the Precious Lord album by Al Green on repeat daily. My neighbors must think I’m insane to listen to the same record over and over and over did I say over, again. Ha!
His rendition of How Great Thou Art infuses my soul with greater faith every single time. You should listen to it. My only requirement is you crank it up really loud so that you can feel it in your bones. It’s great! Listening to it now…
Yes! Sometimes we have to crank that music so our bones feel it! I’ll check it out!
I love how you included ways to connect with God thst are both active and focused, as well as more passive, in what’s on in the background. Both are important!
I find I need both to really feel that connection!
It’s so simple, really, to spend time with God, but yet, it can be so hard. We make excuses that we are too tired, too busy, too whatever. Thank you for these great tips and insight!
I make it so much harder than it has to be!
I love these simple tips! I find just putting on my worship playlist while I do dishes can do a lot for correcting my focus and my reconnecting to God!
Isn’t it amazing how that happens?!
Thanks for these very practical – and doable – tips, Becky. Sometimes we can make our time with the Lord so complicated. I have chosen your post as my G & T feature this week. Feel free to get the “I Was featured” button for your post tomorrow;)
Thanks Aimee 🙂
Great tips! I love how simple they are! I sometimes beat myself up if I miss a Bible reading. I love starting the day out by saying his name! Just like you’re greeting other family members in your house! So profound but simple! Thank you!
I love this! I’ve started saying Good morning and Good night to Him and it’s really a sweet, simple connection that I love.
Thank you for the great ideas!
Rebecca, Thank you, those help!
