Don’t miss this simple list of things I’m using and loving during the endless days at home.
There are plenty of things I could tell you about that I’m using during the pandemic. Most of them involve chocolate, butter and flour. And while those may be delicious, they only help so much. Kind of like stretchy pants.
(By the way I love these chocolates and I’ve heard these pants are terrific in case you’re in need!)
Here are 7 things that are really helping me lately:
1. My Bible
Don’t scroll past this. Seriously.
My Bible and I have always had an uncertain relationship. It’s not that I don’t like my Bible or believe my Bible. It’s always been more about me making space for my Bible in my life. I’ve been doing that lately, and it really does help.
(This is the one I use most and I love it!)
2. Things That Point Me to Truth
There’s a lot of uncertainty out there right now. Honestly, it’s not even all out there. A lot of it is in me. Can you relate?
I’m learning how helpful it is to surround myself with truth when I feel this way. Whether it’s a Bible study or a beautiful mug or even a great tee, it helps to see truth when things feel so off kilter.
3. My People
Yes, all this togetherness is a gift. And it drives me nuts at the same time. But I’m trying to be intentional about connecting with people. The people that live with me are the obvious place to start. But even connecting with those outside my home is helping me remember I’m not alone.
Simple texts, FaceTime, or Zoom meetings are becoming part of my daily life. It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it.
(Things like this look like a really great options, too!)
4. Rest
I’m a person that needs rest. It has been harder to sleep lately, but I’m tyring to prioritize things that lead to better rest. Even things like a walk or relaxing with a book for 10 minutes can make a big difference in feeling rested.
(I can’t wait to get this book from my favorite fiction writer!)
5. A Bit of Structure
I love a good plan. It makes me truly happy. But lately, it seems I can’t stick to any plan. Everything just feels slippery, like I can’t quite grab hold of it.
I’m trying to live in the grace space between structure and freedom. It doesn’t come naturally for me to opt for a bit of structure instead of a complete plan. But God is working on it, and showing me how to hold a routine loosely each day.
(I’ve been eyeing this to help me create a bit more rhythm in my days!)
6. Some Entertainment
Yes, TV is making the list.
I love curling up and watching a great movie or getting hooked on a new show. It’s time I can be with my family and decompress. Although, I must warn you that it’s not the best time to watch movies like The Hunger Games. Lesson learned.
(Here are some favorites for my crew!)
7. The Great Outdoors
I always forget how much of an impact some fresh air and sunshine can have.
We’re trying to limit our going out, so I’ve taken to walking around our yard. It’s a small loop and I can walk it without thinking too much, which feels wonderful. I don’t always want to go out and do it, but I am always glad I did.
What things are helping you through these days?
Great tips, Rebecca! I do love my time in God’s word! That makes every day go better! And I’ll try to remember to avoid The Hunger Games! I never actually saw it but can imagine that it’s rather brutal at a time of social isolation! I’ll be pinning and tweeting!
It’s so funny because I love the movies, but right now it’s a bit depressing. Thanks for sharing!
What a great list! I can say DITTO to all of those!! It is not yet scorchingly hot in Texas, so I am taking morning walks with my baby in the stroller, which is helping to deal with being at home all the time. I have been enjoying some crafts and gardening too, specifically a few projects I have wanted to do for months and finally have time to do them!
It’s so beautiful that you can look for the gifts in this season! Love it!
This is a great list – thank you for sharing! Being outside has been so life-giving for me, and I love how you call it the grace space between structure and freedom. I’m trying to live there peacefully!
So grateful we can encourage one another, especially now!
Exercise, TV, extra time in God’s word.
Yes! Although I like some more than others!
Relate to all of these, Rebecca. Especially the great outdoors. My husband and I have been doing a lot of neighborhood walks. And we do a day trip every 1-2 weeks to drive up to overlooks in the mountians and do some hiking. It’s therapy!
Such a great way to spend your time! I think I need to put a family drive on the calendar!
These 7 things are so good and true. “It helps to see truth when things feel so off kilter.” Definitely. I have several things that I remind myself of daily that are true so I can stay on track (such as, “I don’t know” and “I can’t control it” and “I’m with Him”). I’ve also been spending more time outdoors, which I should be doing in ordinary times too. 🙂 Thanks for this list, Rebecca!
Such good things to remind yourself of! And yes, time outdoors is so good for the soul!
I love this because it’s so true: “Yes, all this togetherness is a gift. And it drives me nuts at the same time.” Well, all of it is true, but this is one I’m having the hardest time with. I’m having to trust God for pockets of alone time with everyone home–plus seek His grace to show love instead of irritation.
I am right there with you, Barbara!
I can relate to most of these! I’m a very progressive believer, so I hardly ever turn to the Bible when in “old normal” life, but I have been turning to it more lately. I’m also definitely loving the connection the Internet provides these days.
Isn’t it amazing how this has shifted our hearts back to Him and His Word?!
Rest, a bit of structure, getting outdoors and away from the news.
Yes, please, friend.
All cushioned by His grace and time meditating on the beauty of who He is.
All will be well.
He is still in control and His ways are so much higher than ours!
Great list, Rebecca! Spending time with God keeps my days anchored, no matter what. I’m also getting more rest–something I really needed.
I love the word anchored!
Structure – and my Bible – have really been the best helps for me these past weeks. I really need to take advantage of nature, the beautiful weather lately and getting outside more. But pointing my mind/heart towards truth has definitely been the biggest struggle. So much noise!! Good encouragement – thanks!
There is so much noise! Let’s keep asking God to quiet it and help us focus on Him!
Positive post with interesting shares – and yes I had to click on some of the links for a look/see 🙂
🙂
Hi, Rebecca.
These are such great, practical tips. I have to admit I’ve struggled to leave room for entertainment. I feel as though I should be more productive with all of this time, but I’ve become less able to focus. Thank you for sharing!
Blessings,
Tammy
I find it all comes in seasons, ebbs and flows. I’m learning to be ok with it. Learning!
Oh, Rebecca, you have no idea how I needed to read and reread this post this morning. I need just about all of those things and have been gradually reintroducing some back into my life during this unique period in our history. I am so encouraged by your words, ideas, and a Bible I have never seen before. I love the Scripture references to “go deeper” and the study thoughts. I shall be looking into it a bit more. Thanks. May this day be filled with the joy of the Lord.
Amen, Linda!
This is a great list and I agree with them all – they are all things that I have found helpful too!
🙂
Many of these are helpful to me as well. Especially my Bible. I love this: “the grace space between structure and freedom.” I don’t do well at either extreme, but I try to find the happiest balance inbetween.
Balance is a lovely place to exist 🙂
